Kayd Somali Arts and Culture, in collaboration with Redsea-online and Somali and Somaliland  Comm nities, is proud to present the annual Somali Week Festival at Oxford House, Bethnal Green. The  fest ival is part of Black History Month and will run for one week, Saturday 23rd to Sunday 31st of  Octo ber. The festival offers the best of Somali arts and culture, both old and new, presenting a mix of  e vents including poetry, literature, drama and panel discussions. This year’s festival will be  open ed by the Deputy Mayor of London after which the festival theme will be introduced by Mahamed  Ib rahim Warsame ‘Hadraawi’, one of the greatest living Somali poets. Hadrawi will be joined by the renowned lyric composer and playwright, Ahmed Saleban Bidde, who will narrate some of his  w ork, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A. The evening will conclude with another of our visiting artists, Amina Abdilahi who is a remarkable female contributor to Somali performing arts.

Also taking part in this year’s festival is Ahmed Ibrahim Awale, author of ‘Environment in  Cris es’ and a development worker who has contributed to various areas of Somali health, education and environment.. Yasmeen Maxamuud, author and community activist based in the US will present her book ‘Nomad Diaries’ to British audiences for the very first time. We are also very excited to showcase work from Boon Xirsi, Nadifa Mohamed and many more contributions from talented  arti sts and commentators.
