‘Fanka, Masraxa iyo Suugaantiisa’ – Somali Theatre and Literature by Abdirahman Yusuf Arten

Theatre is one of the most popular forms of artistic expression in the Somali regions, however due to the lack of arts institutions, few plays have been written. Although there are several Somali playwrights, Abdirahman Yusuf Arten is one of only two playwrights to have studied theatre and write each play rather than rely on heavily improvisation and raw talent. Artan, also a director and dramatist, is gifted with a rare talent and insight. He has studied and has been involved in the dramatic arts for over two decades and has held productions of his work in London and in his native Somaliland . This new book comprises of three of his plays;

1) Baqayo Roged – (Somersault)

2) Nolol Waan Abuuri Karnaa- (We Can Create Life)

3) Rajo – (Orphan)

The three plays explore some of the deep-rooted inequalities in certain aspects of Somali tradition, particularly the rarely addressed problems of marginalised social groups. Artan addresses these issues with enthusiasm for solutions and creates a sense hope, paying particular attention to social and economic disparity. Issues of inequality are not only a defining characteristic in his productions but also inherent in his character.

Abdirahman is one of only two living Somalis to specialise in the production of drama on the stage. Aside from his career in theatre, Abdirahman’s activities and talents also extend to the fields of literature and politics. It is his well rounded knowledge that gives Abdirahman’s work the enchanting and engaging flavour which his audiences and readers enjoy.
