and Culture Presents Kayd Somali Arts and culture in partnership with REDSEA-ONLINE.COM, and a range of national, international and local community organisations is pleased to present the Somali Week Festival as part of Black History Month. The SWF is an established festival within the Somali community in London, na tionally and internationally. It celebrates and explores the uniqueness of Som ali art and culture. The festival will showcase this year mix of poetry, prose li terature, plays and music which will be presented by artists, while also allow ing ample time for discussions between artists, professional guests and audi ences. SWF will present and celebrate Somali arts and culture by featuring international and UK-based artists of the highest calibre in a vibrant progr amme of events. There will also be performances by singers and visiting artists such
as Mohamed Jama

Amina Abdilahi,
Boon hirsi,
and also by London based artists such as
Abdirahman Abees, Aisha
luul, Hudaydi, Dararamle, Shukri Sha’ni, iyo Jaango. This day of
Somali poetry will feature the four celebrated visiting poets and
composers: Ali Banfaz, Mahamed Jama Kayd, and Ahmed Saleebaan Bidde.
Maryan Mursal
is one of the
famous talents living in London and is loved for her exceptional
voice. She will be joined by artists Nimo Degan, Gaadaco Farhaan
Xidig and Abdifitaah yare - expect an unforgettable evening
promising a smooth blend of melody and harmony. Said Salah Ahmed
will be reading
traditional Somali folklore to children and their parents. He will
also be available to discuss with parents the best way to read to
children. He will be followed by Ismail Aw-adan. Ahmed Abdillahi
will also read from his new children’s Book “Bakayle Fariid Ah” and
a new cartoon film by Abdalah Shafey will be shown. Don’t miss this
opportunity for your child. The 101 Performing Arts Group will also
provide a “have-a-go” circus, where children can join in and
participate. This event aims
to encourage female artists to present their work publicly and to
celebrate female creativity; a performance from Amina Abdilaahi will
follow. Amina is one of this year’s visiting artists. Amina
Abdilaahi was successful members of one of the biggest Somali
artists groups “Waaberi band”. The second half of the evening will
be dedicated to showcase women’s poetry by artists such as Aisha Lul
and Warsan Shire. Warsan is also a stand-up comedian mainly known in
the university circuit. This event aims
to promote citizenship, personal responsibility and human rights
from the young person’s perspective. We want to engage, encourage
and support young people to think about citizenship and the control
they have to change their lives. Speakers are Michael Newman, Global
Citizenship Schools Project Worker from Tower Hamlets council, Lynn
Fredriksson from Amnesty International, Somali Young People and
artists Abdi Bahdoon, Abdiraxman Abees,Warsan Shire, university
student, Hodah Ismail and the final performances will be from
Mustafe TITI. Shaping the
Future: Shaping Strategies & Engaging Refugees & Migrant communities
with public & civic institutions across London Shaping the future: The Asian Health Agency in partnership with Tower Hamlets Somali Community Network & Kayd Art & Culture is organizing this seminar on this important issue to bring leading refugee organisations, policy makers, voluntary organisations, service providers and members of the refugee communities together to discuss how to improve refugee communities representation through community involvement and engagement. Speakers include
Aymero Gebremeskel, TAHA BME Leadership and Engagement Project,
Fazil Kawan, Head of Development, Refugee Council, Ermias Alemu,
Community Development Coordinator, South West London & St George’s
Mental Health Trust, Isman Warsama, Tower Hamlets Somali Communities
Network; Jan Shaw, UK Refugee Programme Director, Amnesty
International. We will This is the
second time we are putting on ‘Baqayo Roged’, a drama produced by
Abdirahman Yusuf Arten. Kayd is pleased to be working in partnership
with Chisendale Dance Space on this drama. This one-act play will
deal with some of the core principles of the festival which are
gender, equality and tolerance. After the play there will be a short
discussion the issues raised by the writer with Ali Ahmed Rabi,
Rashid Sheekh Abdilahi, Martin Orwin. There will be also a
performance from Aar Band. Two films will be
screened on night. The first film is a short film about Djibouti
Somali theatre. The second film is from Adam Dirir, Editor of Somali
eye magazine and documentary maker. His film is about street boys in
the heart of Somaliland. The documentary focuses on their way of
life and their voices. This comedy night
promises to be an exhilarating mix of old and new. Boon Xirsi is one
of our visiting artists, an amazing performer and a great comedian.
Boon will co-present with our own London-based Prince Abdi, the only
established Somali stand-up comedian, and the young poet Abdi
Bahdoon. Redsea-online
promotes literature, writing and reading. There will be book
presentations from authors who have published books in Somali
language and Somali books will be available for sale, among these
are: Abdilahi Awed
Igeh,
author of Ladh Jama Musse Jama,
editor of Sheeko iyo Shaahid short stories The final SWF
event will bring all visiting artists together with UK-based artists
who will be sharing the floor. Abdurrahman “Abees” Durta, Faysal Aw
Abdi Anbalash, they will be joined with some of our famous visiting
artist, Ahmed Saleebaan Bidde, Ali Banfas and Mahamed Jama Kaid and
more, this will be a great opportunity for London's Somali
youngsters and older audiences alike to share the joy of listening
to these artists' works. This final event promises to be a fitting
conclusion to this year’s festival.
