KULMIYE: LOSING SUPPORT AND MOMENTUM
The last few weeks have been terrible for KULMIYE and continue to be
so. As they say in politics, a week is a lifetime. In the case of
KULMIYE, the last few weeks have been an eternity. Ever since Mudane
Silaanyo’s; KULMIYE party chair; politically damaging statement
regarding his continued belief in a “federal Somalia ”, the air
seems to have gone out of the party.
Whilst KULMIYE members of the Somaliland House of Elders and House
of Representa tives carry on with their work, for example,
Deputy Speaker, Mr. Bashe Mohamed Far ah has been in Sool
engaged in mediations and consultations, and Deputy Speaker, Mr.
Abdilaziz Mohamed Samale has been representing Somaliland at a
recent Common w ealth parliamentary conference in the
United Kingdom, both have been effective in th eir tasks; the
KULMIYE party hierarchy has been ineffective in addressing the
current apathy engulfing the members and supporters.
With the exception of Mr.Ahmed Hussien Isse, who in a recent article
and a subsequ ent debate defended congressman Donald Payne’s
relationship with Somaliland, (plea se note Mr. Hussein Isse had no
comment to make on Mudane Silaanyo’s declaration, but limited his
article to the issue of Mr. Payne) even though, an astute politician
as the late President Egal remarked after meeting the congressman,
“This man has no lo ve for Somaliland”. There has been a deafening
silence from the party. KULMIYE has been hemorrhaging support and
momentum.
Today in Somaliland the two political parties that matter are UCID
and UDUB. Of cou rse, that could all change, because the
political arena is always in a constant state of flux. Nevertheless,
it could only change for KULMIYE, if the party members and
suppor ters begin the address the lack of vision, creditability and
leadership at the summit of the party.
It is worth noting that KULMIYE, like all Somaliland parties, is
blessed with talented and patriotic members, this article has
already mentioned three of them, and in previous articles Mr. Muse
Bihi had been included in that group.
Unfortunately, for KULMIYE and to a certain extent, for Somaliland ,
none of the names mentioned above appear be the standard bearer for
party, and that has to change, and quickly.
